Sourced predominantly from a single beautiful vineyard in the Flaxman Valley area, this Shiraz demonstrates the heady combination of purity, power and elegance of which the Eden Valley is capable. A subtle nose of fresh black fruits is lifted by hints of clove spice and bay leaf. This complex nose leads to a full bodied but incredibly lithe palate that is intense, driven and bursting with dark cherries and cooking spices. The velvet tannins provide a smooth framework and lead to a long and balanced finish of lingering black fruits.

Wine Details
It is a fitting tribute to fourth generation Lawrence and Edna Schrapel who, for over 50 years, were resolute and caring custodians of the Bethany vineyard.
Picked in the early morning, the fruit for this wine was destemmed but not crushed to give a whole berry ferment to maximise fruit expression. After a gentle fermentation on skins for 8-10 days wth twice daily pumpovers the wine was pressed to combination of 72% new and seasoned French oak (both hogsheads and puncheons) before resting for its 18 month maturation prior to blending.

Tasting Notes
Colour
Rich purple with crimson rim
Aroma
A beautifully fragrant nose of wild cherries, dark cooking spice, petunias and a hint of bergamot.
Palate
Full of dark fruits, ironstone and spiced summer puddings. There is a dazzling blend of intensity, power and beauty on the palate of this wine, sweet dark fruits are balanced by filigreed tannins and lifted florals. The palate has pace and precision as well as mouth coating fluidity. The finish is redolent of dark fruits, turned earth and warm kitchens.
Food Pairing
Roast red meats, game birds and pasta with ragu
Notes
Viticulture
The 2022 vintage overall was a very balanced and excellent vintage. Adequate rainfall in 2021 was followed a heavy hailstorm which did create some damage in the Shiraz vineyards. However, the main summer ripening season was blessed by moderate temperatures with no very hot (>35C) days and cool nights. This lead to a long and gentle ripening period allowing all fruit to achieve full flavour maturity along with sugar ripeness. The outcome was a long harvest period without any undue pressure from the weather and both white and red grapes showing great flavour intensity, excellent retention of acid and in the case of the red grapes, exceptional colour density.

Gorgeously complex and enticing, the wine shows black and blueberry, violet, game, clove, and stylish oak characters. The concentrated palate exhibits terrific fruit richness with elegant complexity, splendidly structured by beautifully infused tannins, making it highly enjoyable. At its best: now to 2039.

The Vintage Journal
For me, this is the star of the premium collection for this vintage. The fruit is sourced from a single vineyard in the Flaxman Valley sub-region of the Eden Valley. The fine 2022 vintage seems ideally suited to providing refinement and elegance in the best reds from that region. This wine is a tribute to Lawrence and Edna Schrapel who, for more than half a century, were custodians of the Bethany vineyard. Under cork. A whole berry fermentation was followed by a year and a half of maturation in a combination of French oak hogsheads and puncheons, 72% new. A very dark maroon colour, with purple rim, chocolate, plums, spices, blackberries, mocha, violets and vanilla are all present on the nose. There is seriously impressive oak integration here. The palate is ripe and lifts further, making this a most exuberant style. On the palate we see the move to flavours of mocha, coffee beans and cassis. Richly flavoured, this is absolutely delicious and will drink beautifully over the next 15–20 years. The wine finishes with wonderful length and the silkiest of tannins. Drink now–2045

Ink black at the core, deeply staining purple tones at the rim. Ripe blueberry, dark chocolate and clove aromatics. It is weighty and powerful on the palate, fruit and spice notes fill every corner of the mouth as it flows with a velvet glide across the tongue. Tannins have enough definition to keep it driving into a long and ultimately well focused, drying finish.
