Visiting Bethany
Step beyond the cellar door and discover Bethany — one of the Barossa’s most historic and characterful villages.
Established in 1842 by 28 families who had travelled from Silesia (now part of Poland), Bethany was the Barossa’s first European settlement. More than 180 years later, its heritage is still wonderfully visible in the village today.
At the heart of Bethany is its historic church, built in 1883 from bluestone quarried locally. Around it, vineyards, old stone buildings and quiet country roads tell the story of a community that has stayed closely connected to the land.
Many local families still grow grapes and make wine, with generations of Barossa history woven into the vineyards around the village.

The Bethany to Vine Vale Trail winds through some of the region’s most beautiful countryside, taking in sweeping vineyard views, historic villages, old-world charm and plenty of opportunities to stop, explore and enjoy the local food and wine.
Bethany is the perfect place to begin. Just beyond Tanunda, this historic village is where the Barossa’s European story began, when 28 Prussian families settled here in 1842. Today, the vineyards they helped establish are still part of the landscape, alongside generations of winemaking, farming and community.
Whether you’re walking, cycling, exploring with the family or simply looking for a different way to experience the Barossa, the trail is an invitation to slow down and take it all in.
