Sourced from a single beautiful elevated (280-300m) vineyard on the Schrapel property, this wine speaks clearly of its place. Lifted aromatics, pretty blue/black fruit profile and fine grained, persistent velvet tannins that create a wine of great presence and character.

Wine Details

Picked in the early morning from the single vineyard of Homestead Across the Creek Top Block, the fruit for this wine was crushed to fermenter with a proportion of whole berries to maximise fruit expression. After a gentle fermentation on skins for 8-10 days with twice daily pumpovers the wine was pressed to both new and 2-4 year old French oak hogsheads for 18 month maturation prior to blending and allowing to come together for two months prior to bottling.

Tasting Notes

Colour

Dense and dark purple robe from core to rim.

Aroma

Beautifully perfumed nose, speaks clearly of the elevated, cooler vineyard location with bright blue floral aromatics working their way through the darker berry fruits and hints of clove spice oak.

Palate

A balanced and opulent palate of fine grained tannins with layers of rich blue fruits, warm blackberry crumble and crushed lavender. Soft, fine grained tannins provide a generous yet svelte framework for this panoply of dark berry fruits. The finish is very long and rich yet elegant, fine boned and crisply closed.

Food Pairing

Perfect with roasted white meats, gnocchi or tomato based pasta dishes.

Notes

Our vineyard in the Barossa foothills is part of a project looking at the effect of ‘terroir’ on wine.

In 2014, Wine Innovation Cluster (WIC) winemakers made nine wines using Shiraz grapes from nine different Barossa vineyards. The wines were blind-tasted to look at the similarities and differences in flavours and textures.

This is part of the Barossa Grounds Project, which seeks to understand and communicate regional differences in the Barossa. Differences include soil, elevation and climate and how they affect the sensory profile of wine.

Our Shiraz Vineyard represents the Barossa Foothills. The East Grounds Shiraz is a classic wine boasting intense cherry aromas and flavours and soft, fine-grained tannins.

Viticulture

2021 provided us with exceptional conditions for growing high quality grapes. It was one of those years that had a little bit of everything but not too much of anything. We had good winter and spring rains with total rainfall for 2020 being right on the money for a normal average Barossa year (around 450-500mm). This lead to good fruiting conditions and a much more balanced yield than previous, drier years. The growing season then proceeded to give some nice warm conditions. Critically, the evening and night temperatures were always on the cooler side

The Barossa Foothills include such famous names as Bethany, Krondorf and Vine Vale, and can be distinguished by their black clay soils (Biscay soils). This wine is from a single vineyard in that region, the highest of the estate vineyards. Just 200 dozen made. Dark maroon in colour. Notes of chocolate, coffee grinds, cloves, handfuls of warm earth, aniseed and smoked meats. There is already some early complexity here. Mushroom notes emerge. There is both depth and power, with a supple and seductive texture. Silky tannins. Excellent length with real persistence. This has a decade plus, probably two, ahead of it. Love it.

This is delicious and immensely appealing; the perfumed bouquet shows black/blueberry, violet, cedar and mixed spice aromas with a touch of dark cocoa complexity. The concentrated palate delivers fleshy texture and succulent fruit intensity, finishing superbly long and opulent.
